About Us

The Johnson's Island Civil War Prison is located on Johnson's Island in Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie, Ottawa County, Ohio.  The island is privately owned with 17 acres under the ownership of The Friends and Descendants of Johnson's Island Civil War Prison.  This organization had not only purchased Fort Johnson and half of the actual prison compound, it also has primary records which have been donated to the organization as well as maintains ownership of all the archaeological finds and records recovered through Heidelberg University's Center for Historic and Military Archaeology.
